CROWDSURFING THROUGH LIFE

Somewhere between shutterbug and gutterpunk

3/28/14 @observatoryoc I am going to try to keep up with this thing. I have been going to so many shows the last year and take so many photos. I am going to share here I have decided. This is Lower Class Brats and The Old Firm Casuals doing what they do.

The Widows

Sean and Zander

The Swinging Utters

Bad Religion!!!! I was anticipating this show for a couple of months… I should’ve known from the get go it was gonna go blah for me… I tried every avenue to get a media pass for this show… No luck. Then Against Me! Cancelled and the wind was sucked out of me. I thought this was going to be a chance to see one of my favorite bands in a smaller venue. Got to the show and Polar Bear Club was starting and killed it… The crowd wasn’t keen on them but a few in front were stoked… Then Bad Religion and they of course were tight and on it!!! The sound was so bad and at 5’1” it was even worse in a sea of people. The picture is my view of Bad Religion….

                                                Cholos On Acid!!!!

It’s funny how sometimes in life the weirdest things can remind you of home. It can be any of your five senses ( six for the ladies) that catches it. On this night, it was a sonic homecoming. My parents were never in a thrash/punk/metal band, but somehow seeing one this night gave me that sense of home that we all like, the one that makes you smile in a goofy sort of way that nobody else understands. I assume that’s why we see people in crazy situations with a content look on their face, as if somehow in the middle of chaos they’re feeling completely at ease with the world. I always that that’s what the song “Understanding In A Car Crash” was about, but seeing as how I’ve never really listened to it..I have no idea. Great title though.

So we had just finished watching a burlesque show and did what any true punk rocker would do and started checking our phones for local band happenings. After a quick search we checked the lineup at our local (as in a few miles from the pad) dive bar, The Shakedown. Cholos On Acid were playing and though none of us had listened to them, they were described as hardcore punk, so we were in. It was a small crowd of true fans, and it was a very, very, VERY mixed bag of people. I think it was a good thing, but I can’t really be sure. Either way, everyone felt the awesome vibe that the Cholos put on that night and not a converse/doc martin/new balance/vans/wingtip/or combat boot was still that night. I of course grabbed the only camera I had ( iPHONE) and snapped a few pic to remember the night by. Gentlemen, thank you for your few minutes of metal, and my few minutes of home.

LOWER CLASS BRATS @ THE YARD

                                                 1/13/2013

Low-class might be the perfect term to describe the venue for this show, and that might be what made it seem so perfect. The smell of alcohol and pot mixed with excitement was overwhelming at the packed little venue by the freeway in a rough part of town that is known as “The Yard”. The band was well received by fans old and young as they powered through a solid set of sing-a-longs. By nights end, everyone was covered in sweat and satisfaction…minus the passed out kid in the corner who missed it all. Just like Clockwork indeed.

                                          HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013!

                                             ( ya’ filthy animal)

So much like every eve before the new year before it, this one was filled with perverts, sluts, creeps, and overly dressed goons. Of course, this was just the onstage entertainment. There is always a party to be had when local faves the Creepy Creeps play, and this was no exception. Amidst sweaty drunks and an exquisitely dressed crowd, the new year rang in the only way I wanted it to….with a bunch of masked creeps playing straight-forward garage rock and roll.

The Unbearable Lightness Of Being (A Photographer)

This appears to be the start of something, or at least the start of something about the start of something. The obligatory post that reveals the who, the what, and dammit, the why of this Tumblr. It’s about life, my life, and trying to capture something I love; Rock and Roll. The Arrows said it, Joan Jett said it, for some odd reason Britney said it, and this is me saying it. This is also me showing it. I want to make myself better at photography, and I want to do that by taking pictures of something I’ve always been into and always been around. I go to shows, I always have, and hopefully always will. This is my project. It’s not my daily photo-blog, but this is going to be a year of shows, and my pictures of them. I could easily show you a picture a day of my life, but my life is just like yours…and who wants to see the same clock punched every single day. This is my escape, our escape, and just like the story that I stole this title from told us, we only live once….so lets make the most of it. Or at least, make something of it.
